Semantic Technologies for constructing scientific meta-reviews

A two-year, full time vacancy at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam for a 
research-oriented Post Doc with a PhD in computer sciences to work with 
us on innovating an open access database to store and retrieve 
scientific findings for meta-reviews.

The Cooperation Databank Project is an ambitious multidisciplinary 
effort to improve how we practice science. Scientists often use search 
engines to find relevant literature, and then proceed to read relevant 
papers to generate conclusions about specific topics, which are then 
cited in their own research. We will use semantic technologies to store 
and retrieve scientific research results to support aggregating 
quantitative information across studies in meta-analyses.

To our knowledge, this is the first project in the social sciences that 
will link the storage of scientific findings to state-of-the-art methods 
to aggregate and analyse such findings. A unique corpus is available of 
nearly 2000 research papers from one of the most mature experimental 
research topics in the social sciences, cooperation in social dilemmas, 
all which have been annotated with more than 80 variables at a deep 
semantic level to a high degree of accuracy.

For this project we are searching to fill a two-year, full time, 
research-oriented Post Doc with a PhD in computer sciences. Expertise in 
data modelling and semantic technologies is required, knowledge of 
statistical software (R) is an advantage. The position is expected to 
result in several international peer-reviewed publications about this 
new method of storing research findings, and how this method can promote 
scientific progress. The P.I. Dr. Daniel Balliet has received an ERC 
Starting Grant for this project (1.5 million euros) inluding budget for 
travel to international conferences. The post-doc will work in close 
collaboration with prof. Frank van Harmelen and dr. Annette ten Teije 
from the Knowledge Representation group of the Computer Science 
Department, a world-leading group in semantic technologies.

Funding is available for a two year post-doc position, starting as soon 
as possible. The salary will be in accordance with university 
regulations for academic personnel, and depending on experience, range 
from a minimum of €3475,- gross per month up to a maximum of €4757,-
