WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: 

The Ontological and Foundational Perspectives in Business Process Modelling (onBPM) workshop is focused on foundational and ontological investigations of business processes, business process models, and business process modelling.

The BPM literature provides high level definitions of what business processes are, as well as a number of different business process modelling languages. Nonetheless, a clear characterisation of what a business process is, what its key elements are, what sets business processes apart from other process entities, and a clear ontological analysis of business process model development are still missing.  

The goal of this workshop is to explore these missing aspects and to foster a discussion on the ontological foundations in business process modelling. onBPM aims at investigating the nature of business processes, what distinguishes and characterizes it from other kinds of process, the role of time and temporal representation in business process models, the dependence between real-world business processes and the corresponding models, the “implicit” business process elements that should be taken into consideration in the models, and the impact of ontological decisions in the modelling aspects.

The workshop invites two types of submissions:
full papers, maximum page limit 12 pages including bibliography in the LNCS format.
short papers, exactly 6 pages including bibliography in the LNCS format. Short papers are particularly suitable for presenting preliminary ideas, discussions and challenges on the topics of the workshop.
